Events: Kritika Kultura Lecture Series presents Thomas Anh Ngoc Hoang
Kritika Kultura, the international refereed journal of language, literary, and cultural studies of the Department of English, Ateneo de Manila University—in cooperation with the Department of Philosophy (AdMU)—will host a lecture by Thomas Anh Ngoc Hoang. The lecture is titled “Journey of Invention of the Self from West to East: The Case of the Making of the Modern Self in Vietnam (from 17th to 20th Century) from an Intercultural Perspective.” The lecture is on Jan. 31, 2019, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m., at SOM 111 (Ching Tan Room), Ateneo de Manila University. The event is open to the public. About the lecture This paper aims at telling the story of the making of the modern self in Vietnam from the 17th to 20th century. This narrative is an attempt to question the genesis and the formation of this Vietnamese modern selfhood viewed as Vietnamese modern identity. In terms of theoretical background, this study draws mainly from philosophical hermeneutics (Heiddeger, Gadamer, Ricoeur) which allows to understand how this new perception of self makes sense for Vietnamese people in their experience of life and their being in the world since that historic period. Taking into consideration the double dimension of the interpretive process, namely historical (Gadamerian historically effected consciousness) and linguistic (Heidggerian idea that «Language is the house of being»), my analysis will examine a «fusion of horizons» between traditional (Vietnamese) culture and modern (Western) culture, and a «mediation» that is the new Romanized script of Vietnamese language («quoc-ngu») invented by Europeans missionaries in seventeenth century and then adopted as Vietnamese “national script” at the beginning of the 20th century. About the lecturer After his BA in French Literature in Vietnam, Thomas Anh Ngoc Hoang obtained an MA and a PhD in Communication Studies in CELSA, Sorbonne University IV in France in 2010. He acquired a rich international professional experience as translator, French language teacher, webmaster, lecturer in Communication, director of General Education (in Vietnam), Director of Formation Program for a Catholic NGO (in the Philippines). Since 2013, he has been working as Associate Professor of Communication in the Faculty of Humanities, the Université Catholique de l’Ouest (UCO), Angers, France. He is also an associate member of the laboratory GRIPIC, Sorbonne Paris IV University (EA 1498). Thomas Anh Ngoc Hoang conducts a critical examination of contemporary Vietnamese and French societal transformations, related to digital media and digital culture. His research focuses on collective identity, online activism, social imaginaries, the Vietnamese diaspora, Catholic faith practices, the relationship between digital media, religion and politics. His current works examine an epistemological question in Communication Studies from a particular “in-between” position of a communication researcher who navigates between two languages and cultures, namely Vietnamese and French ones.
