Events: Kritika Kultura Lecture Series presents Vicente L. Rafael on “The Sovereign Trickster”
Kritika Kultura, the international refereed journal of language, literary, and cultural studies of the Department of English, Ateneo de Manila University—in cooperation with the Department of Philosophy (AdMU) and Ateneo de Manila University Press—will host a lecture by Vicente L. Rafael. The lecture—titled “The Sovereign Trickster”—is on Aug. 23, 2018, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m., at CTC 413, Convergent Technologies Center, Ateneo de Manila University . The event is open to the public. About the lecture The figure of Rodrigo Duterte looms large in our current moment. He seems to embody two notions of sovereignty. One is related to the power to decide on the exception to the law and determine who will live and who will die; the other, the freedom from the power of norms by way of dissipation and excess. In this presentation, I seek to ask about the dual sources of this power with reference to the works of Michel Foucault. While most of Foucault’s work has been focused on Europe (without, however, being Eurocentric), I inquire into the usefulness of his works for reckoning with Duterte’s claim to dominate death while monopolizing laughter. About the lecturer Vicente L. Rafael (AdMU class of 1977) is the Giovanni and Amne Costigan Endowed Professor of History at the University of Washington in Seattle. He is the author of several works on the cultural history and politics of the Philippines, including Contracting Colonialism, White Love and Other Events in Filipino History, The Promise of the Foreign and Motherless Tongues: The Insurgency of Language Amid Wars of Translation, all published by Duke University Press and co-published by Ateneo de Manila University Press. He also wrote the Introduction to the recent collection of Nick Joaquin's stories, The Woman Who Had Two Navels and Tales of the Tropical Gothic (Penguin Classics).
