Events: Kritika Kultura Reading Series presents Glenn Diaz

Kritika Kultura, the international refereed journal of language, literary, and cultural studies of the Department of English, Ateneo de Manila University—in cooperation with the Ateneo de Manila University Press, the Fine Arts Department, the Department of English, and the School of Humanities (AdMU)—will host a talk by Glenn Diaz. The event is on Apr. 10, 2018, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m., at SOM 111 (Ching Tan Room), Ateneo de Manila University. The event is part of the School of Humanities Week, and is open to the public.

About the event

Taking off from a brief discussion of the poetics and politics of The Quiet Ones (2017), the talk will attempt to situate the work and, tangentially, Philippine fiction in English, in the context of phenomena related to and around globalization. These may include, among others, the “burden” of literary traditions amid an ever-broadening pool of sources and influences for Filipino writers, the enduring question of political responsibility in one's work, and notions of autonomy vis-a-vis the complex ecosystem of artistic production in the country.

About the author

Glenn Diaz’s first book The Quiet Ones (Ateneo de Manila University Press) won the 2017 Palanca Grand Prize for the Novel. His work, including short fiction, poetry, and criticism, has been published in the US, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines. He is a recipient of the M Literary Residency at Sangam House in Bangalore, India, among other fellowships. An instructor with the Department of English at the Ateneo de Manila University, he lives in Manila.
