Call for Papers: Review Essays

Kritika Kultura will institute a Review Essays section starting with its February 2013 issue. The Review Essay is a time-honored feature of the most consequential journals across the disciplines; after a decade of continuous operation as well as accreditation by important academic indexes, Kritika Kultura aims to make it a regular section of the journal. Equivalent in standing and substance to the regular academic article, the Review Essay is either commissioned directly from scholars in the pertinent academic field/s, or undertaken independently and submitted by them, for publication in the journal.

A critical assessment of a minimum of five (5) recently published and related titles in language, literary, and cultural studies, or in creative work across the genres, the Review Essay is an estimation of the state of the art—or an occasion for a critique of the “established wisdom”—in a given field or set of related fields. Kritika Kultura particularly welcomes review essays that situate discipline- or genre-specific works within the same, or common, conceptual or theoretical spaces (e.g., through comparative frameworks, or via less evident and yet present affinities among such works), where these might otherwise be considered separately by practitioners or scholars in their respective fields. This preferred approach—while neither exclusive nor prescriptive—is in keeping with Kritika Kultura’s transdisciplinary mandate. The minimum length of the review essay is 25 pages double-spaced (excluding notes and works cited).

Submission Guidelines

Authors seeking to propose a Review Essay (or to submit one already completed) must first send a short description (in 300 words or less) or field queries about its appropriateness for the journal to Oscar V. Campomanes, PhD (ocampomanes@ateneo.edu, ocampomanes@yahoo.com; cc: kritikakultura@gmail.com; subject heading: KK Review Essay). Proposals and submissions must be e-mailed on or before 31 October 2012. For further details regarding the editorial policy and monograph format, please refer to the Editorial Policy section in the Kritika Kultura website.
