Kritika Kultura An open-access semi-annual peer-reviewed international electronic journal of literary, language, and cultural studies of the Department of English of the Ateneo de Manila University, Philippines.

 

Ateneo Institute of Literary Arts and Practices (AILAP), Kagawaran ng Filipino (AdMU), and Kritika Kultura will host a lecture by Michael D. Pante titled “Pagpopook sa Paaralan sa Pelikulang Pilipino.” The lecture, a part of the Sine Bughaw Talks, is on Apr. 7, 2017, Friday, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m., at Faura Audio Visual Room, Ateneo de Manila University. The lecture is open to the public.

Pante’s abstract reads: “Magmula sa mga huling taon ng rehimeng Marcos hanggang sa kasalukuyan, naging higit na litaw ang paggamit sa paaralan bilang pangunahing tagpuan ng mga pelikulang Pilipino kumpara sa mga naunang dekada. Mula sa mga obrang may lantad na komentaryong sosyopulitikal (hal., Moral, Batch ’81) hanggang sa mga sineng nakatutok sa teen market (hal., Dear Diary, Wooly Booly, Hataw Na!, Gamitan), pati na rin sa kasalukuyang bugso ng indie cinema (e.g., Pisay, Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa), makikita ang bisa ng espasyo ng eskwelahan para ilahad ang mga tema gaya ng pagkamulat, pagkakaibigan, pagsalungat sa tradisyon at pagmamatyag, pag-ibig, at aktibismo. Isang panimulang pagbaybay ang panayam na ito upang mailahad ang ugnayan ng mga pelikulang nabanggit sa pangkasaysayang heograpiya (historical geography) ng mga paaralan sa Kalakhang Maynila, lalo na ang pag-usbong ng dalawang kumpol ng paaralan sa pusod ng Maynila (U-belt) at sa mga dating liblib na lugar ng Quezon City (Diliman at Katipunan).”

About the lecturer

Michael D. Pante is an instructor in the Department of History, Ateneo de Manila University. He serves as the Associate Editor of the journal Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints. He received his doctorate degree from the University of Kyoto. His dissertation is about the historical geography of Quezon City.
