Events: Kritika Kultura Lecture Series presents Benilda S. Santos: Pantas ng Ating Panahon
Kritika Kultura, the international refereed journal of language, literary, and cultural studies of the Department of English, Ateneo de Manila University—in partnership with the Ateneo Institute of Literary Arts and Practices (AILAP), Fine Arts Department (AdMU) and Kagawaran ng Filipino (AdMU)—presents “Benilda S. Santos: Pantas ng Ating Panahon,” a series of lectures featuring Michael M. Coroza, Gary Devilles, and Oscar Campomanes. The event will be moderated by J. Pilapil Jacobo. The forum will be on Mar. 21, 2017, 5:00 to 6:30 p.m., at the Faura AVR. This event is open to the public. About the forum Hangarin ng panayam na ito na ilahad ang isang mapanuring talambuhay ni Benilda S. Santos bilang pantas ng ating panahon, upang maisakasaysayan ang panahon ng diwang malikhain sa lawig ng pamantasan. About Benilda S. Santos Benilda S. Santos is a teacher, poet, and critic of Filipino Literature. She holds a PhD in Filipino Literature from the University of the Philippines, and an MA in English Literature from the Ateneo de Manila University. A three-time winner of the Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature in poetry (both in English and in Filipino), and a recipient of the Gawad Balagtas for her lifetime achievement in the field of writing poetry and the essay, Dr. Santos is likewise a recipient of two awards in recognition of her excellence in teaching: in 2003, she received the Outstanding Senior Teacher Award given by the Ateneo School Parents Council, and in 2007, she was the pick of the Metrobank Foundation Search for Outstanding Teachers (Higher Education category). Santos’s dissertation, “Ang Pagkukurus ng mga Talinghaga ng Sarili at Kasaysayan sa Poetika ng Babae” (The Intersection of Metaphors of the Self and of History in Women’s Poetics), received the Lourdes Lontok-Cruz Award from the UP Center for Women’s Study Foundation, Inc. in 1998. Santos’s first poetry collection, Pali-palitong Posporo, has gone through three editions, the latest of which was published by High Chair in 2016. Kuwadro Numero Uno: Mga Tula, her second book of poems, received the National Book award in 1997. Its second edition, the UP Jubilee of Student Edition, was published by the University of the Philippines Press in 2005. Currently, Benilda S. Santos serves as Dean of the School of Humanities, Ateneo de Manila University, and a member of the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino. About the resource persons Michael M. Coroza is an Associate Professor at the Department of Filipino, School of Humanities, Ateneo de Manila University, handling courses in literature, creative writing, and literary translation. Since academic year 2012-13, he has held in the said university the Rev. Horacio de la Costa, SJ, Endowed Professorial Chair in History and Humanities. Likewise, he received from the same institution the Rev. Henry Lee Irwin, SJ, Memorial Teacher Award for the Humanities for the academic year 2015-16. As a creative writer, he has garnered eight major awards for his poems, essays, and short stories for children from the Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature. He received from the royal family of Thailand the Southeast Asia Writers’ Award (SEAWRITE) in 2007 and from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) the Ani ng Dangal Award in 2009. He is currently the Chair of the Unyon ng mga Manunulat sa Pilipinas (UMPIL, or Writers’ Union of the Philippines) and the newly elected Chair of the National Committee on Language and Translation (NCLT) of NCCA. Gary Devilles teaches Philippine Literatures, Marxism and Popular Culture in Ateneo de Manila University. His dissertation, “City Sense: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Sensing Manila” won the 2016 Nancy Millis Award for meritorious thesis. Gary studied at La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia. HIs research interests include sensory ethnography, affect studies, and urban space. Oscar V. Campomanes holds the PhD in American Civilization from Brown University. He teaches literary and cultural studies in the Department of English, Ateneo de Manila University and currently sits as an elective member of the School Council of the Loyola Schools. His research interests include American empire critique, Filipino-American literary history, cultural studies/semiotics, art/media criticism, and critical historiography. His essays have appeared in the journals MELUS, PMLA (Journal of the Modern Language Association of America), Japanese Journal of American Studies, positions: east asia critique, Field Notes, and in various critical anthologies published locally and abroad, including Positively No Filipinos Allowed: Building Communities and Discourse (Temple University Press, 2006; Anvil Publishing, 2008) and The Philippines and Japan in America's Shadow (National University of Singapore Press, 2011; reprinted as America's Informal Empires, Anvil Publishing, 2012). A book he edited, KRITIK/CRITIQUE: Essays from the J. Elizalde Navarro National Workshop in the Criticism of the Arts and Humanities, 2009-2012 (UST Publishing House 2014) was a finalist for the 2015 National Book Award (anthology category) from the Manila Critics Circle and the National Book Development Board of the Philippines. He serves as Workshop Director of the annual J. Elizalde Navarro National Workshop in Art Criticism held in Baguio City every summer. J. Pilapil Jacobo is Assistant Professor at the School of Humanities of the Ateneo de Manila University where they teaches Literature, Theory, Criticism, and Cultural Studies in English and Filipino. They holds the PhD in Comparative Literature and the MA in Comparative Literary and Cultural Studies from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and the AB-MA in Filipino Literature, from the Ateneo de Manila University. They is a Member of the Film Desk of the Young Critics Circle, a trans-disciplinary society of scholars of Philippine Cinema based in the University of the Philippines at Diliman. Their scholarship is concerned with the tropics as time, through the rubrics of metaphor, catastrophe, and toxicity. As founding co-editor of Queer Southeast Asia: A Journal of Transgressive Art, they will be editing "Trans: Toward the Differential." They writes poetry in two languages of the Philippines. Kritika Kultura is acknowledged by a host of Asian and Asian American Studies libraries and scholarly networks, and indexed in the MLA International Bibliography, Thomson Reuters (ISI), Scopus, EBSCO, and the Directory of Open Access Journals.
