Kritika Kultura Lecture Series presents Teodoro Agoncillo's The Revolt of the Masses: Text and Context After 60 Years
Kritika Kultura, the international refereed journal of language, literary, and cultural studies of the Department of English, Ateneo de Manila University—in partnership with the Rizal Library (AdMU)—presents “Teodoro Agoncillo's The Revolt of the Masses: Text and Context After 60 Years,” a series of lectures featuring Paul Dumol, Vernon Totanes, and Resil Mojares. The event will be on Thursday, December 1, 5:00 to 6:30 p.m., at the Rizal Library (4/f). The lecture is open to the public.
The lectures will revisit the text of Teodoro Agoncillo's The Revolt of the Masses, reconstruct the context in which it was written and published sixty years ago, and re-examine its continuing influence on Philippine historiography. What made Revolt revolutionary 60 years ago? In what ways can it still be considered revolutionary now?
About the resource persons
Paul Dumol is Full Professor in the Department of History, and past Vice President for Academic Affairs of the University of Asia and the Pacific. He has an MA and a PhD in Medieval Studies from the University of Toronto, Canada. He graduated with an AB degree in Communication Arts, summa cum laude and valedictorian, from the Ateneo de Manila University. He is a playwright who writes in Tagalog and is popularly known for “Ang Paglilitis ni Mang Serapio.” He is one of 100 recipients of the Centennial Honors for the Arts given by the Cultural Center of the Philippines. In 2012, he received the Gawad Rizal from the National Historical Commission for his articles, lectures, and plays on Jose Rizal. His English translation of the documents of the Synod of Manila of 1582, published by the Ateneo de Manila University Press, won Best Translated Book in the National Book Awards in 2015.
Vernon Totanes is the Director of the Rizal Library at the Ateneo de Manila University, Quezon City, and currently a Visiting Research Scholar at the Center for Southeast Asian Studies, Kyoto University, Japan. He is a licensed librarian with a PhD in Information from the University of Toronto, Canada, a Master of Library and Information Science degree from the University of the Philippines, and a BS degree in Management Engineering from the Ateneo de Manila University. His PhD dissertation, entitled "History of the Filipino History Book," received the National Commission for Culture and the Arts’ Young Historian’s Prize in 2015.
Resil Mojares is Professor Emeritus at the University of San Carlos in Cebu City. He has a PhD in Literature from the University of the Philippines and has served as Visiting Fellow /Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of California at Los Angeles, National University of Singapore, and Kyoto University in Japan. In 2012, he was Arthur Lynn Andrews Distinguished Visiting Professor in Asian Studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He is the author of such prize-winning books as Origins and Rise of the Filipino Novel (1983), Waiting for Mariang Makiling: Essays in Philippine Cultural History (2002), and Brains of the Nation (2006). A new collection of his essays, Interrogations in Philippine Cultural History, is forthcoming from the Ateneo de Manila University Press.
