Journal History

The journal first came out in 1971, with the title Katipunan: Dyurnal ng Panlipunang Sining at Agham (Katipunan: Journal of Arts and Sciences), under the editorship of Dr. Nicanor Tiongson, and associate editors Dr. Bienvenido Lumbera and Dr. Virgilio Almario. It was part of the publications under the School of Arts and Sciences of the Ateneo de Manila University. The journal came out with four issues, and operations were discontinued towards the end of the year 1971.

With the intention of upholding and enriching Philippine studies and local ideas and scholarship, the Department of Filipino of the Ateneo de Manila University aims to continue the efforts of Filipino studies and research initialized by the former journal, through interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches in tackling concepts and issues related to language, literature, arts, and culture.
